G. TECTOR was born in the Province of Limburg, a Belgian region in which many immigrants used to work in the coalmines. This socio-cultural background has afforded him a broad outlook on the world, making him a cosmopolitan.

At the age of 20 he worked in Congo (Africa) for 2 years.

Upon his return to Belgium, he began his studies in Psychology and Sexuology at the University of Leuven and started his professional career as a psychotherapist in Antwerp.

When it comes to his artistic life, he is rather a late-developer.

Although he liked to paint and draw as a child, in his teenage years, on the other hand, studies and sport had priority.

It was only in the 1980s that he started to follow regular courses in drawing, painting and art history, all at different art academies located in Antwerp.

He also joined training courses and workshops in anthroposophical painting given by Joyce OEY (Holland).

In 1990 he had his first individual exhibition.

From that moment on he regularly exposed his art work, individually as well as collectively, mainly in Belgium and Holland.

He opened his own gallery in 1994, where he has collaborated with a group of artists until now, continuously promoting the work of young artists.

His focus shifted gradually from psychotherapeutical work to art: painting, teaching art and organizing art exhibitions.

===========

For G.TECTOR painting means searching through the spontaneously created (emerged) lines, colours and surfaces and so – step by step – discovering the final essence of the particular painting, in which mostly a story of human figures plays the leading role.

When he does not succeed to get there, he covers the unfinished canvas lightly with white paint, by doing so the newly created chaos of lines and reliefs serves as the starting point to an unknown destination.

This is the way his creative process works.  At this point, G. TECTOR makes a selection from the "data" offered by the canvas, so that progressively distinct forms can emerge.

These shapes transform into human silhouets, but also into landscapes, trees or just impressions of movements and colours.

He realizes that at any stage every painting offers a multitude of possibilities, at a certain point, however, a decision has to be made in which direction he needs to go.

His creative work is therefore not only an intuitive expression, but also a rhythmic alternation of unconscious activity and the rational judging of it.

The core of his art is the adventure, the discovery; just like a journey you let a piece of art grow, but you don't know where you will end.

But a journey, a painting, life as a whole is not just walking, to get your way you regularly have to pause for a while and take a step back to realize where you are and in what direction you will continue.

His paintings reveal their true meaning or essence only to those who are able to open their minds to coincidence and adventure; in other words, to those who fancy a journey through undiscovered territory.

You have to look at his work from a certain distance to see how the different parts fit together.

They are the result of abstract impressions emerged from the inner, from the artist's unconsciousness, guided by his hand and ratio.

For that reason he prefers larger sized canvasses. They provide the artist with the necessary space allowing him to express himself more spontaneously through physical movement during the act of painting.

Although controlled by professional demands – such as composition, rhythm, aesthetic harmony and colour balance –  his work is free and wild, without inhibition: a continuous stream of feelings evoked in colour.

 G. TECTOR seems to be restless, but also shows vitality, energy and strength.

Nevertheless, it is obvious that several of his works are about communication.  For example: 2 figures – male/female – yin-yang- searching for each other.

In his own words: “One figure or element is too static, the central element has to interact with someone or something to obtain a dynamic interaction, a dialogue, a story".

As an artist, G. TECTOR offers us an interesting journey by creating his own world of fantasy landscapes where all kinds of creatures try to communicate and try to be tuned into each other.

Through his experiences in Africa, his many travels to different continents and cultures, together with his psychological knowledge, intellectual talents and his inner emotional life, G. TECTOR has succeeded in realizing a harmonious fusion of his youth impressions.

This is why his work is seen as universal and is understood by all those with an open mind to aesthetic freedom and adventure.
